No Open Combat Missions have been confirmed for Modern Warfare 4. Everything shown so far points to a directed, cinematic campaign. Activision promises larger combat spaces, but a wider battlefield is not the same as the MWIII mission format.
In Modern Warfare III, Open Combat Mission meant a specific level structure built around free roaming, loadout discovery, and the freedom to change the overall plan. A few extra firing positions do not meet that definition.
Entrenched, the complete campaign mission included in the MW4 beta, makes the direction clear. It is a large-scale assault built around friendly infantry, armored vehicles, and the defense of a nuclear power station. Nothing shown in the mission matches the full MWIII Open Combat Mission structure. On the evidence available now, MW4 is not bringing back Open Combat Missions. Stranded is the only revealed mission too briefly shown to classify.

What Activision has confirmed about the MW4 campaign

Activision describes the Modern Warfare 4 campaign as a mix of trench warfare in Korea, close-quarters fighting in New York, chases through Paris, SAS night raids in Mumbai, and city-wide assaults. Its official announcement also promises large-scale battles, covert missions, combined-arms warfare, and cinematic set pieces.
The scope is broader than a corridor shooter, but Activision never calls these levels Open Combat Missions. A large battlefield can still move the player through a fixed sequence of objectives.
Activision has been similarly careful with Entrenched. The company calls it a complete campaign mission and a “large-scale assault” in which players fight alongside friendly infantry and armored vehicles. The official beta briefing never identifies it as an Open Combat Mission.
When Activision promoted Modern Warfare III, it repeatedly named Open Combat Missions. MW4’s campaign material does not. Until Activision uses that label or shows the defining systems, wider combat spaces should not be reclassified as OCMs.
What an Open Combat Mission actually is
“Open Combat Mission” is not simply another name for a level with a wide area. Activision gave the format a specific definition when it introduced the system in 2023.
According to the company’s MWIII Open Combat Missions breakdown, these missions have fixed objectives, but players decide how to complete them. They allow free roaming within enlarged mission boundaries and support different approaches, including stealth, direct assault, alternate routes, vehicles, and vertical movement.
Players can also find weapons, Supply Boxes, loose equipment, and loadout crates within the level. The missions use relatively few checkpoints, which makes retreating and changing tactics part of the experience.
The practical difference is who controls the plan. An Open Combat Mission hands that control to the player. Choosing the left or right side of the same firefight is not enough.
Why Entrenched looks like a linear mission
Entrenched provides the clearest evidence because players could complete the entire mission during the beta.
Activision describes the mission as a large-scale assault in which friendly forces fight to stop a strategically important nuclear power station from falling into enemy hands. Players advance with infantry and armored vehicles through cinematic combat rather than entering a free-roam infiltration zone.
Activision’s full beta guide presents Entrenched as “dramatic cinematic Campaign action.” The description fits the playable level: a directed mission built around staged battles and scripted events.
Players can choose cover, switch weapons, flank enemies, and handle individual fights differently. Those are encounter-level choices, not the mission-wide freedom found in MWIII.
Nothing in Activision’s description identifies a free-roam infiltration area, optional mission-wide routes, discoverable loadout crates, drivable vehicles, or a system for leaving an objective and returning with a different plan. Instead, Entrenched moves through staged battles and scripted events toward a defined ending.
Calling it linear does not mean calling it small. It means the mission controls the order and pace of its major events.
How Entrenched compares with MWIII Open Combat Missions
| Feature | MWIII Open Combat Missions | What Entrenched has shown |
|---|---|---|
| Fixed objective with a flexible approach | Confirmed | Major objectives appear sequential |
| Free roam inside enlarged boundaries | Confirmed | Not demonstrated |
| Mission-wide stealth or direct assault | Confirmed | Not demonstrated |
| Weapons, Supply Boxes, and loadout crates | Confirmed | A comparable sandbox system has not been shown |
| Ability to change the overall plan | Central to the format | Local combat choices may exist, but broader freedom is not established |
| Vehicles as tactical options | Present in many missions | Friendly armor appears, but player-controlled vehicles are not confirmed |
| Minimal checkpoints | Confirmed | Not officially documented |
| Scripted cinematic progression | Used in separate traditional missions | Central to Entrenched‘s structure |
Entrenched is a large-scale assault with friendly armor. Neither feature establishes the systems Activision used to define an Open Combat Mission. The structure of the level matters more than how open the battlefield looks.
Why the MW4 campaign can look open without using Open Combat Missions

Part of the confusion comes from Activision’s promise of “larger combat spaces.” MW4 was developed natively for current-generation consoles and PC, which Activision says enables greater scale, density, and more active worlds.
Larger spaces can give players more firing positions and moment-to-moment freedom. A city assault might offer several pieces of cover, multiple buildings, and a broad front while still moving everyone toward the same checkpoint. Combined-arms warfare can put infantry and armored vehicles in the same battle without turning the mission into a sandbox.

Individual mechanics can cross between modes. An equipment system or familiar HUD element can appear inside an otherwise linear level. Open Combat Missions were a complete mission-design framework, not a label triggered by one shared feature.
What the Stranded preview does and does not show

The Stranded preview is the one piece of campaign footage that cannot be classified yet. It shows a broader environment, but not enough of the level to support an Open Combat Mission label.
The official Stranded campaign first look shows selected moments rather than a continuous mission walkthrough.
Parachuting into open terrain or fighting across a wide area would not be decisive by itself. To identify Stranded as an Open Combat Mission, we would need to see the systems that defined the MWIII format: enlarged free-roam boundaries, meaningful mission-wide approaches, optional equipment or loadout discovery, and the freedom to abandon one tactic for another.
The clip is too short to reveal how the mission is structured. Until Activision shows a full walkthrough or the campaign becomes playable, Stranded remains unconfirmed.
The remaining missions can be checked when Campaign Early Access begins on October 16, one week before the full launch.
Frequently asked questions
Is Entrenched an Open Combat Mission?
Available evidence says no. Entrenched follows a directed sequence built around staged battles and cinematic events. It does not demonstrate the free-roam boundaries, discoverable loadouts, or mission-wide tactical freedom Activision used to define MWIII’s Open Combat Missions.
Is Stranded an Open Combat Mission?
It has not been confirmed. The preview shows an open-looking environment, but it does not reveal enough about the mission boundaries, objectives, equipment, or available approaches to classify Stranded accurately.
Is the Modern Warfare 4 campaign linear?
All revealed evidence points to a mostly linear campaign. The playable Entrenched mission uses a directed sequence, while Activision describes the wider campaign in terms of large battles, covert missions, and cinematic set pieces rather than Open Combat Missions.
Do larger combat spaces make a mission an Open Combat Mission?
No. Activision says MW4 uses larger combat spaces, but size alone was never its definition of an Open Combat Mission. The MWIII format also included free roaming, different mission-wide approaches, equipment discovery, and room to abandon one plan for another.
Was Entrenched playable in the MW4 beta?
Yes. Activision included the complete campaign mission during both beta weekends, making it the first campaign mission offered in a Call of Duty beta.
When does the Modern Warfare 4 campaign become playable?
Campaign Early Access is scheduled to begin October 16, 2026, for eligible digital preorders. The full game is scheduled for release on October 23 for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2.
