Minecraft Bedrock Edition is the version Mojang developed to run across PCs, consoles, phones and tablets. It still gives you the familiar Minecraft experience: Survival, Creative, crafting, building, exploration, multiplayer and regular content updates.
“Bedrock” is mostly a label used to distinguish this version from Minecraft: Java Edition. It is not a mod, a separate mobile spin-off or the bedrock block found at the bottom of a world.
Bedrock and Java receive the same major content releases, but they are not interchangeable. Multiplayer networks, mods, world files and some gameplay mechanics differ. That distinction becomes important as soon as you try to join a friend, install custom content or copy a technical build from YouTube.

Windows is the only platform in this table where players commonly have both choices. Open the Minecraft Launcher and check the game name:
- Minecraft for Windows means Bedrock.
- Minecraft: Java Edition means Java.
The Marketplace is another giveaway. If the main menu includes Minecraft Marketplace, you are using Bedrock Edition.
Older tutorials may refer to Pocket Edition, MCPE or Windows 10 Edition. Those names are still widely used, but the current Android, iOS and Minecraft for Windows releases belong to the Bedrock family.

There is no official native Bedrock client for macOS or Linux. Minecraft can be installed on both operating systems, but the officially supported edition is Java.
This causes a common misunderstanding on Mac: downloading the Minecraft Launcher does not mean Bedrock will run natively. The launcher provides access to the Java version supported by macOS.

On Windows, Minecraft is sold as Minecraft: Java & Bedrock Edition for PC. One PC purchase provides access to both editions. You can switch between Minecraft for Windows and Java Edition from the launcher.

6.1 Crossplay is Bedrock’s biggest advantage
Suppose one person plays on Windows, another has an Xbox and someone else wants to join from an iPad. Bedrock gives that group an official route into the same multiplayer ecosystem.
Java multiplayer works across Windows, macOS and Linux computers running Java Edition. It does not connect directly to ordinary Bedrock worlds.
For most people, this decides the question before mods or technical differences even enter the conversation. If your friends already play Bedrock, choosing Java will make joining them unnecessarily difficult.
6.2 Java still has the stronger modding ecosystem
Java remains the obvious choice for players who want large modpacks or extensive community modifications. Its mods can overhaul world generation, progression, automation, technology, combat and performance.
Bedrock uses add-ons, behavior packs and resource packs instead. They can change far more than a simple texture, but they do not run through the same modding system as Java. A .jar file made for a Java mod loader cannot be installed directly into Bedrock.

6.3 Small mechanical differences can break a tutorial
Bedrock and Java do not handle every command, redstone component, mob or block interaction in exactly the same way. Farm designs are where players often discover this the hard way.
Before gathering materials for a large iron, gold or raid farm, check whether the tutorial is labeled for Bedrock. A build can look perfect and still fail because it relies on Java-specific spawning or redstone behavior.
That does not make one edition universally better. It means Minecraft tutorials are not always edition-neutral.

Bedrock players on supported platforms can play together online. A Windows player can join friends using Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, Chromebook, Android or iOS.

A friend’s world is the easiest choice for a casual session. One player opens a multiplayer world and invites the others. The catch is that access depends on that host’s session.
A Realm is a private world hosted through Mojang’s subscription service. It is better for a regular group that wants the world available without coordinating around one person’s local game.
Servers suit players looking for public communities, minigames or more customized multiplayer experiences. Available servers and connection options can vary by platform.
Supported consoles also offer local split-screen. That lets several players share one console and display, but it is separate from online crossplay.
10. Is Bedrock Minecraft free?
No. The full version of Bedrock is a paid game.
Mojang offers free trials on selected platforms, and Bedrock may be included with an eligible Game Pass subscription. Availability and subscription terms can change, so check the official store rather than relying on an old price or promotion.
The base game does not include every Marketplace item. Some skins, worlds and add-ons are free, while others require Minecoins, PlayStation Tokens or a direct platform purchase.
