Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 brings together a new single-player campaign, a redesigned Multiplayer experience, and the return of DMZ as a dedicated extraction shooter. Infinity Ward is also introducing new systems such as Ballistic Authority, expanded weapon customization, modular Multiplayer environments, and persistent DMZ progression.

Official details now cover the Campaign, Multiplayer maps and modes, loadout customization, Prestige, DMZ, supported platforms, and available editions. Here’s a closer look at what has been confirmed for Modern Warfare 4 so far.

Release date and platforms

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 launches on October 23, 2026 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2. The game will not be available on PlayStation 4 or Xbox One.

Players who purchase an eligible digital edition can access the Campaign ahead of launch, beginning October 16. This Early Access period applies to digital pre-orders or pre-purchases of the Standard Digital Edition or Vault Edition.

On PC, Modern Warfare 4 will be available through Battle.net and Steam, and on Xbox.

Campaign

Modern Warfare 4 opens with North Korea launching a full-scale invasion of South Korea, beginning with the assault on Hajin City. The Campaign follows Private Park Hyun Jun and his squad as they fight to defend their country, while a separate storyline follows John Price as he operates outside the chain of command.

The Korean storyline puts players on the front lines of the invasion, while Price’s manhunt leads him toward a weapon powerful enough to shift the balance of power. The two narratives eventually converge as the wider conflict escalates.

Captain Price and Archer

Captain Price returns after the assassination of General Shepherd and the disbanding of Task Force 141. Now on the run, he conducts a personal manhunt while becoming increasingly entangled in a conflict involving former allies and enemies.

At the center of the wider crisis is The Archer, a dangerous adversary pursuing an unknown weapon of potentially catastrophic power.

Multiplayer

Modern Warfare 4’s Multiplayer combines precision gunplay with a broad selection of maps, modes, and combat scales.

The launch lineup features 12 Core 6v6 maps, alongside larger-scale battles and Gunfight experiences. Ground War introduces Combat Outpost, while Kill Block offers a modular battlefield that can reconfigure its layout and sightlines. Infinity Ward is also introducing new systems for Killstreak progression, loadout customization, weapon progression, and tactical equipment.

Smartstreaks

Smartstreaks allow both eliminations and objective play to contribute toward Killstreak progression. Kills remain the primary driver, while actions such as capturing and defending objectives can also help players reach their next reward.

Multiplayer modes

Modern Warfare 4 launches with a mix of respawn, round-based, large-scale, and party modes.

Returning options include Team Deathmatch, Domination, Hardpoint, Kill Confirmed, Free for All, and Search & Destroy, while new additions include Counter Attack, Inflation, and Hijack. Gunfight returns alongside the new Gunfight 10v10 format.

For larger battles, Combat Outpost brings Ground War into the lineup, while Gun Game and Drop Zone provide additional party-focused options.

Ballistic authority

Ballistic Authority is the technology foundation behind Modern Warfare 4’s gunplay. It brings weapon handling, aiming, accuracy, recoil, visibility, audio, and player-camera behaviour into a more unified combat model.

The system is designed around deliberate weapon control rather than traditional bullet bloom. Weapon motion, operator stance, and visual framing can therefore affect how clearly players read and respond to engagements.

Movement and traversal

Movement in Modern Warfare 4 is built around grounded combat while giving players greater control over traversal.

Mantling Control lets players steer during a mantle, aim down sights while entering a space, sprint out to preserve momentum, or disengage and reposition. Other movement actions, including sprinting, sliding, climbing, and transitioning to prone, can also be chained together to maintain momentum across the environment.

Kill Block

Kill Block is set inside the Westbridge Training Facility and is built from three modular sections: two outer areas and one central combat space. Each section has multiple variants, allowing the battlefield to reconfigure between rounds.

More than 500 configurations are possible at launch, changing routes, sightlines, cover placement, and engagement pacing. Weather can shift between deployments, while randomised Slabs introduce recognisable elements inspired by previous Modern Warfare maps.

Kill Block supports Gunfight 3v3 and Gunfight 10v10, with Search & Destroy, Domination, and additional Core modes also planned for the modular environment.

Create-a-Class

Modern Warfare 4 brings its major loadout choices into a centralised Create-a-Class system. Operators, weapons, Perks, Equipment, Field Upgrades, and Killstreaks can all be configured within individual loadouts, allowing players to build classes around specific combat roles.

The system also uses a streamlined Pick 3 Perk structure. Because Operators and Killstreaks are tied directly to each loadout, players can configure those elements around a specific weapon setup and playstyle.

New equipment

Modern Warfare 4 expands its equipment pool with several new tactical options. Trip Wire creates explosive traps across different surfaces, while Smoke Wall can provide temporary visual cover. Razor Wire adds another area-denial option by restricting movement through key areas.

The Riot Shield returns as a destructible Field Upgrade, while the Bomb Glider gives players direct control of a low-cost aerial Killstreak before diving toward a target.

Gunsmith and Apex Attachments

Modern Warfare 4 expands Gunsmith while cutting down on redundant attachment unlocks. The Gunny optimizer provides an optional starting point, using unlocked attachments to create Short Range, Long Range, or Balanced builds that players can further customize.

Apex Attachments add another layer of weapon progression. The majority of weapons launch with their own Apex Attachment, and some can have more than one. These specialized modifications are unlocked through weapon progression and can significantly alter how a weapon behaves in combat.

The Weapon Progression system also lets players unlock an attachment once and use it across compatible weapons.

Prestige and progression

Modern Warfare 4 offers two Prestige paths: Classic Prestige and Regular Prestige.

Regular Prestige resets the player to Level 1 while preserving level unlocks and Create-a-Class content. Classic Prestige, meanwhile, follows the traditional reset-and-rebuild model, resetting level and Create-a-Class progression in exchange for increased XP rates and exclusive Prestige rewards.

Weapon progression also extends across Multiplayer, DMZ, and Warzone through the shared Camo Track, giving players a longer-term objective across the different experiences.

DMZ

DMZ returns as a dedicated extraction shooter built around exploration, combat, resource gathering, and high-risk deployments.

Players can enter the Exclusion Zone alone or with a squad, search for advanced military technology, complete objectives, encounter hostile forces, and decide when to extract with what they have recovered.

The mode combines Story Missions, Dynamic Operations, player-driven encounters, and match-to-match progression, giving each deployment its own objectives, encounters, and opportunities for long-term progression.

A living combat world

DMZ uses a dynamic threat system that reacts to player activity inside Hajin. As Operators attract more attention, enemy forces escalate their response with stronger reinforcements and specialised units.

Threats range from Lieutenants and roaming commanders to tanks, drone swarms, Deathstalker helicopters, Juggernauts, and Elite Strike Teams.

For Solo players, the Stealth Meter provides an additional warning when AI enemies are close to detection. Audio cues and HUD indicators change as detection becomes more imminent, giving players time to break line of sight or reposition.

Active Duty Operators and progression

DMZ connects individual Operators to the extraction loop through persistent inventory and progression systems.

Each Active Duty Operator has their own Backpack and Loadout, allowing players to prepare different setups before deployment. Missions and Operations also provide Cash, which is transferred to the Wallet and can be used between operations.

Hajin Exclusion Zone

The Hajin Exclusion Zone is the main DMZ setting, created in the aftermath of the Modern Warfare 4 Campaign.

The region is shaped by abandoned military technology, weapons stockpiles, radiation, mass evacuation, and collapsing infrastructure. Major locations include the Fallout reactor, Prison complex, Hajin City, and Military Base, each offering different combat situations, traversal challenges, and points of interest.

Weather can also shift during an operation. Rain, fog, and overcast conditions can reduce visibility and change how players navigate familiar routes.

Crafting and resources

Materials collected during deployments can be brought back to the FOB and processed through the 3D Printer, which provides access to a growing range of equipment and support gear.

Craftable items include Night Vision Goggles, Parachutes, Ballistic Vests, Backpacks, Killstreaks, and other specialized Gear. Upgrading the printer unlocks additional recipes and more advanced equipment.

Primary, Secondary, and Melee weapons cannot be manufactured through the 3D Printer. Those weapons and their attachments are instead purchased through Gunsmith using Cash earned during deployments.

Missions and Dynamic Operations

Story Missions advance the wider DMZ narrative through objectives tied to specific locations and scenarios inside Hajin. They are designed for both Solo players and squads while taking place within live DMZ deployments populated by other Operators.

Dynamic Operations generate multi-step objectives that can change from match to match, ranging from securing assets to rescuing personnel or assaulting hostile forces. Side Ops and Free Roam activities provide additional ways to explore Hajin without following a single fixed objective path.

Forward Operating Base

The Forward Operating Base, or FOB, serves as the main hub between DMZ deployments. It provides access to the Stash, weapon purchasing, firing range, bounty boards, and the 3D Printer, while upgrades unlock additional services and capabilities over time.

Recovery features

DMZ also includes recovery systems designed to soften the consequences of a failed deployment without removing the risk of extraction.

The Tourniquet provides a temporary survival option for wounded Operators who do not have Self-Revive available. Meanwhile, the MIA System allows players to spend Cash at the FOB to deploy rescue teams and recover Operators who were lost in action.

These systems do not eliminate the consequences of failure, but they give players additional ways to preserve long-term progression after a difficult deployment.

Looting and resource discovery

Loot is distributed throughout Hajin according to location and strategic value, encouraging players to learn where different supplies are likely to appear.

Police stations can contain combat gear and tactical equipment, hospitals may provide medical supplies, while residential districts can offer crafting resources and scavenged materials. Dropped weapons can also carry damaged optics, broken attachments, or other field-worn characteristics, while high-value Lieutenants may carry customized weapons with unique attachments and camouflage.

Learning the map therefore becomes part of DMZ progression, especially when players are searching for specific resources, equipment, or high-value loot.

Editions

Modern Warfare 4 is available in Standard/Cross-Gen and Vault Edition versions, with the latter bundling additional Campaign, Multiplayer, and DMZ-related bonuses.
